The island is then developed and promoted for tourism. After more than a decade of failed efforts to unionize and improve workplace policies, frustrated Pacific Electric Railway workers respond to a denial to unionize by the National War Labor Board with violent protests and a strike. Workers ultimately receive a pay raise but the open shop policy continues. Los Angeles purchases firefighting vessel Boat 1 for the Los Angeles Fire Department to operate out of San Pedro. In 1915, Aline Barnsdall, an oil heiress, first approached Frank Lloyd Wright not to build a house but a theater. In 1919, she purchased Olive Hill, a 36-acre mount on Hollywood’s eastern edge and far north of downtown Los Angeles.

The State Normal School at Los Angeles opened on August 29, 1882, on what is now the site of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library system. South Gate and West Covina are incorporated as cities. One of the largest churches in the nation, it serves as the home of Aimee Semple McPherson, a flamboyant and charismatic faith healer and preacher. McPherson becomes one of the most talked about Los Angeles personalities in the 1920s.
In the early 1890s he emigrated to the United States in Seattle, Washington and began retail employment in dry goods. The hotel was so successful that in 1906 a huge addition, which included a new entrance, chapel, ballroom, etc. and 125 guest rooms, was constructed running along Prospect Ave (later Hollywood Blvd.), stretching west to Orchid Drive. The whole place, including the gardens took up three acres. The 'Castle', in foreground, and the 'Salt Box', both built before 1890, were the only two buildings saved from the bulldozer when the entirety of Bunker Hill was leveled to make way for the future.

After the national depression of 1907, the first part of the following decade, which is when it appears this photo was taken, brought another period of sustained growth in the city and region. The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The house, which is a National Historic Landmark owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California, is open for public tours.
